- Born in Jamestown, Ghana in 1865. Moved to England to train as a missionary, but then began an incredible sporting career.
Details
- He became the official fastest man when he ran a record for 100 yards in 10 seconds in 1886. This record stood for 30 years.
- Then became the first black professional football player, playing for Preston North End as a goalkeeper. In keeping with the theme of general all round sporting brilliance he also played as a winger occasionally
- He went on become a cycling champion, pro cricket player and a rugby player.
- Sadly he died penniless in 1930.
